Carmen & David's Creamery, a new city ice cream shop at 23 N. Prince St., opened Friday.

The shop, in the former home of the Purple Mug coffee shop, will feature slow-churn, premium ice cream made on the premises.

David Garcia-Hommel, who owns the shop with his wife, Carmen, said it will emphasize fresh and local ingredients in its ice cream, sherbet and frozen yogurt.

Garcia-Hommel said he has more than 165 ice-cream recipes and will rotate roughly 30 flavors at a time. The current varieties include double chocolate, cherry vanilla and molasses. The shop also sells hot drinks, including coffee and hot chocolate.

Since the spring, the new owners have been renovating the Prince Street building, with the major work being to move the kitchen from one end of the space to the other. The renovations also refurbished a small back room that features a marble fireplace.

Garcia-Hommel estimates that the renovations cost around $17,000.

In all, the ice cream shop spreads across three distinct sections. Once some new tables are added it will have seating for about 40.

Winter hours: noon to 8 p.m. Tuesday through Thursday, noon to 10 p.m. Friday and Saturday, 1 to 7 p.m. Sunday.
